"The Visit to London" |
||||
| Published by Methuen & Co in 1902. This book tells the story in pictures and verses (by EV Lucas) of two country children's visit to London. Amongst the 24 places that they visit are the Tower of London and Nelson's Column. The children are also taken to Randolph Caldecott's memorial (see adjacent), designed by Sir Alfred Gilbert, in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral. Today many people would just walk past this memorial but in the Victorian era Caldecott transformed the world of children's books with his "shilling toy books" which were published each Christmas between 1878 - 1886. |
